2018 Iceland and Switzerland

Golden Light over the Swiss Alps

Andy and I recently returned to Iceland during the Northern WInter to share the wonder and beauty of the glaciers, ice caves, volcanoes, black sand beaches, icebergs, frozen waterfalls and the aurora with our wives and families.

One of the aims of this trip was to maximise our opportunities for witnessing the Aurora Borealis again. This was particularly so for one of the members of our group who had spent a week in Iceland in Dec 2016 without experiencing the magic of the Aurora. To this end we organised a stay in a farmhouse in a remote location near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. The outlook was not promising as Iceland had just experienced two back to back blizzards with all roads closed. Fortunately we eventually arrived at our location and was rewarded with almost 2 hours of a dancing sky.

The other highlight of our trip was spending a week in exploring the Swiss Alps. We based ourselves in Interlaken and Zermatt, in what was the height of the ski season. It was strange to be the only persons boarding the mountain trains with tripods instead of skis and snowboards. Nonetheless we thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Alps despite sub zero temperatures and highly variable weather. One of the highlights of our time here was a hike between Rotenboden and Riffelberg. Originally we aimed to hike to Riffelsee Lake - which was frozen and snowed under, but we were fortunate to catch some spectacular sunset light as the peak of the Matterhorn revealed itself briefly on a -24C afternoon.

We have combined our images as well as some video from our DJI Mavic Pro drone into a short video, highlighting our favourite landscapes.
